Principal port and touristic heart of the Azores is the archipelago’s capital, Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel island. Ponta Delgada is the largest and most visited city in the Azores. White-washed houses and buildings, 17th and 18th Century convents and churches decorate its rolling hills. Cobbled streets and small squares are found around the centre, where there is also a large boulevard, which is perfect for evening seaside walks.
Lagoa das Sete Cidades Furnas Villa do Nordeste Sightseeing is a major tourist attraction in Ponta Delgada. The sightseeing is normally organized in tours which can last up to 3 hours long. One of the top places to sight see is Furnas, where you can find natural hot springs and also the Gorreana Tea Factory. The second most popular destination is the Lagoa do Fogo, which are beautiful volcanic landscapes and beautiful scenery of the beaches. This is also part of a nature reserve so its a nature lovers paradise. Another great place to visit is the Nordeste. This is where you can find the 10th Island of Azores. Here you can find waterfalls, watermills, well cared for Belvederes,ethnography, gastronomy and landscape. It is a breathtaking view and is the highest part of the Island of Sao Miguel.
The continuing restless volcanic activity seems to fill you with radiant energy and the salty, clean winds treat you to the world’s best free facials. There’s whale watching, swimming with dolphins, and diving with manta rays to be had, plus canyoning and kayaking. You can walk inside volcanoes, and around them, and drive along empty roads fringed with millions of azaleas and hydrangeas.
Tea plantation Cha Gorreana – On the north coast is one of Europe’s few tea plantations. It has been ongoing since 1883, and the tea is packed by hand on the corresponding factory. You can taste four different kinds of tea, before possibly buying something.
Terra Nostra Park – In Furnas is the beautiful and impressive botanical garden where you can bathe in the fountain of youth, with over 30 °C, ferrous water. Towels and bathing suits can have a yellowish discoloration of the water. You can rent towels at the park.
Church of Nossa Senhora da Paz – On the hill above the town of Vila Franca do Campo is the little church, Nossa Senhora da Paz. The church was built there because the area is believed to be sacred. From this beautiful place is the most amazing views of Vila Franca do Campo city.
